Child literacy project
themed “Dive into a Book” is another community service project organized by Leo
Club of INTI International University. It was held on the 19th
November 2011, at Vinashini Home, Kuala Sawah, Negeri Sembilan. Vinashini Home
is a home who adopts special kids who are mentally disable or have study
difficulties. A total of 30 volunteers were involved in this event.
At 7.30am, all
volunteers gathered in front of the Multi-Purpose Hall at INTI-IU. After a
short briefing on what aspect we should notice and avoid when handling these
special kids, we depart to our destination. All volunteers are divided into 2
groups, tutoring and library group. Tutoring group are the ones who tutor the
kids. Library group are responsible to clean and arrange a library for the
home.
At 8am, we depart from
INTI-IU and reach there approximately at 8.30am. We were great by the friendly
owner of the home. The owner and few workers guide the disable children into the
activity hall and then our activity started. This is the first time the INTI
Leos visited a home which have disable children. Therefore, everyone have no
idea how to communicate and get close to them. But after a while, all the
tutors manage to mix well with the kids. We prepared simple exercise,
colouring, origami and some other activities for the children. All the children
manage to participate well in our activity with the guide of the tutors.
As for the library
section, the volunteers cleaned the home’s store room and turn it into a
library. They move out all the stuff in the store room to another room. Then
they sweep and mop the floor and wipe away all dirt and dust. After that, they
move the book shelf and arrange the books into the book shelf. Besides, the
volunteers also fix the athena onto one of the unused television. They also
arrange all the computers, tables and chairs in the library. For the decoration
part, the origami and colouring done by the children from the tutoring session
were used. After our session with the kids end, all the volunteers helped out
to clean the surrounding of the home. We depart for INTI-IU at 3pm once all our
activity ends.
This Child Literacy
Project is mainly organized to improve the understanding among underprivileged
children and mentally disable children. The objective of this event is to
increase the awareness about the importance of literacy among students by
tutoring orphans. Leos gains new experience through this event because not
often we get a chance to visit homes which adopt underprivileged children and
mentally disable children. Although it was a tiring experience, however we
still had a great time with all the children. Lastly, Leo Club would like to
express our gratitude to all volunteers who spent one whole day with us in the
home and make this event a successful one. Thank you so much!
