Community Service to Zoo Negara

Hi LEOs, here we go again. This is another community service organised by LEO Club of INTI International University.This time round, we went to Zoo Negara to serve to environment by being one-day volunteers on 5^th November 2011. A total of 43 volunteers from INTI IU were involved in this volunteering event. After almost one and half hour journey to Zoo Negara, we arrived at 7.45AM which is just 15 minutes before our volunteering session begins. We were greeted by the friendly zookeepers for a short briefing. The zookeepers divided the volunteers to different exhibits so that we can help them in the exhibits. The volunteers were divided into exhibits like elephants, giraffes, birds, reptiles, bears, savannah park, apes, research and development centre and many more.

The volunteers assisted the zookeepers to do the daily routines at the exhibits. The first task for many volunteers was to clean the cages of the animals. Some were asked to sweep the surroundings, and some washed the cages of animals. The types of work vary with different exhibits. After the cleaning process, the volunteers were asked to feed the animals. That was the last part of the daily routine. The volunteering session which started at 8AM with two an hour breaks finally ended at 4PM. All of us were so exhausted by the time it ended. But somehow, we still had some energy to walk around the whole zoo before we gathered to depart. The zoo was huge. We literally had to look at signboards every single time we want to make a turn. That huge, it was. We departed Zoo Negara and reached INTI around 5.30PM. 

The main reason behind this community service is to instill love and increase compassion for animals. It’s part of our duty as humans to care for animals, and this is a perfect opportunity for LEOs to work closely with animals and to know exactly how animals are treated.  LEOs were given a chance to gain new experiences because not often, we volunteer at zoo. Although it was a sweaty and tiring experience and for some, a gross one, we still had a great time being real close with the animals and experience a day knowing what’s a zookeeper’s life like. With this, LEO Club would like to thank all the volunteers for their contributions and involvement in this event. We’re glad that we had a group of energetic and lively volunteers.

CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS TALK

On the 2^nd of November, 2011 (Wednesday) from 4pm to 5pm, Leo Club of INTI International University had held a Cervical Cancer Awareness Talk at Seminar Room II, INTI International University. The main objective of the talk was to raise the awareness of better cervical care among the female staff members and also the female students in INTI International University.

            Our main speaker, Ms. Amy of Winalite Global Sdn. Bhd.(creator of Love Moon Sanitary Pads), was invited to give a talk regarding the importance of better cervical care and the risks of not doing so. Most of the participants were female and altogether there were 35 participants. Some of them were male.

            Ms. Amy had given the talk in a slightly humorous yet alarming tone. The talk was very informative as some of the cases discussed and highlighted in the talk are becoming more and more common among the female communities. Many of the participants were unaware of the risks of neglecting proper cervical care until they were informed about it during the talk. Therefore, many of them have gained a lot through the talk.

            After the talk has ended, some of the participants stayed to consult Ms. Amy, as she is a professional in Biogenetics. They consulted her questions and problems regarding personal hygiene for ladies. Of course, they were highly satisfied and pleased with her factual and informative advice.

            Conclusively, the event had succeeded in achieving its main objective. I hope that more and more people will pay attention to the risks of cervical cancer. It should not be a problem to be ashamed of when brought up for discussion as cervical cancer is the No.2 killer in the country for females. Regardless being a guy or girl, we all should work together in protecting ourselves or our female family members and friends as well.

Cervical Cancer Awareness Talk

“EVERY DROP MAKES A DIFFERENCE.”

From the 31^st of October, 2011 till the 4^th of November, 2011 everyday from 10am till 4pm, Leo Club of INTI international University had organized a 5-day blood donation drive. The event was held at SC-1-15 at the Student Concourse. The main objective of this even is to encourage the student body of INTI International University to take an initiative to contribute their blood to those in need. Every bag of blood donated is capable of saving one’s life.

            Everyday, before the commencement of the event, the blood donation unit of Hospital Seremban will come beforehand to set up the necessary equipment and apparatus. After preparations are done, potential donors can start registering for blood donating. The registration counter is set up outside SC-1-15, the blood donating area. Our first donor on the 31^st of October, 2011 was no other than our very own Club President, LEO Shugan Raman. For that, we sincerely thank him for being a supportive leader and a true LEO with high spirits.

            After registration procedures, potential donors will be asked to wait at the waiting area prepared. Once they are called for their turns, they will undergo a few medical checking stations to ensure that they are qualified as blood donors fully. Their blood pressure, blood type and iron content of blood are checked before they start donating their blood. Those who failed to pass the medical checking stations are rejected of their request to donate their blood.

            Many interested, potential donors came to register to become a donor. However, some fail to fulfill medical requirements. Nonetheless, those who have shown their effort and sincerity in trying are still highly appreciated as they have shown the desire to give a gift of life. Of course, the event would never be successful without the hard work of the organizing committee and helpers. Thousands of thanks to those who worked hard for this event!

            Overall, there were 278 people who participated in this event and 206 successful blood donors. The event was considered a success thanks to all those who contributed and helped out. We hope this event would bring a much greater impact to the student body of IIU the next time it is held again.
