World AIDS Day

1st December is the World AIDS Day. Since it is the semester break for students of INTI International University, we decided to organize an online event for the first time ever in conjunction with this World AIDS Day. This event is more on creating awareness towards the online users especially users of social websites like Facebook and Twitter.

Facebook users changed their display pictures to Red Ribbon.

Our first step was to urge everyone in Facebook to change their display picture to the Red Ribbon to show their support towards this event. Surprisingly, this was done not only by the students of INTI International University but also LEOs from other Leo Clubs in District 308B1 as well as LEOs from other countries.

10 Interesting and Useful Facts about AIDS

The next step we took was posting out 10 interesting and important facts about HIV/ AIDS. This was done hourly from 11am to 11pm on the 1st December 2010. These facts are including definition of AIDS, ways of prevention, how it infects the people and also the statistics of people suffering from AIDS in Malaysia and the world. These facts are taken from the newspapers as well as reliable national websites. In addition, we also included some links to the stories, images and videos on the victims of AIDS so that some experience can be obtained from that.

This online event officially ended at 12am of 2nd December 2010. It ended with us thanking everyone who supported this event directly or indirectly. We have also suggested a website for those who are interested to do more than this such as voluntary work or any sort of donations.

Tree Planting

On the 9th of October 2010, LEO Club of INTI-IU has organized a trip to participate in the 10:10 Tree Planting at Raja Musa Forest, Kuala Selangor.

10:10 was a global action weekend where individuals and organizations all over the world organized environmental activities to signify their commitment towards reducing carbon emission by 10% for the year. The project was coordinated by www.350.org and 10:10 Global and was the biggest coordinated event in human history.

The tree planting event was registered as part of the event of 10:10, and was attended by over 100 people from various places, of various age, races, occupations, with one common aspiration – to contribute to mother earth and preserve the environment for the future.

As early as 6:00am in the morning, we gathered outside the Multi-Purpose Hall of INTI-IU. And after a quick round of roll call, we departed for Kuala Selangor at 6:30am. It took about 2 hours to reach our destination.

The organizers of the event, Sai Baba and Global Environment Center, gave us a short briefing of how to handle and plant the trees (Mahang trees, cut branches up to 5 meters long!). When the briefing ended, we took off to grab our equipments – boots, shovels, gloves – and started to work on planting our first trees in the lovely (and sunny) morning.

The first things that we worked on was to remove the plastic bags wrapped around the tree roots, which were put there to retain the moisture and reduce exposure shock to the roots system. After that we proceeded to the swampy area of the grass plains to plant our trees, the trick is too look for wet areas where we could dig easily and then drive the tall trees deep into the soil so that its roots are touching the water.

There were literally thousands of trees to be planted, but we persevered and each of us planted an average of 5-6 trees, which translates to about 150 trees planted by our group. As the weather got hotter, we took a break at 10am, some too tired, while some continued with the work after a short rest.

The event ended at 11:30am, when the weather became almost unbearable (for most people). The organizers gave us a short debriefing session, and thanked everyone for making the event a success. We had our photo session before making our way back to the bus.

On our way back, we had our lunch at the Sungai Buloh Bridge Footcourt, whee restaurants were built on a bridge overlooking the PLUS highway. It felt good to have a good meal after a whole morning of laborious exercise.

At 3:30pm, we finally reached INTI-IU. It was a wonderful experience for everyone, and I’m sure if given a chance, many of the LEOs would participate in this meaningful event again.

Cheers,
Chris Yong Mun Hong

The CNY Marathon :)

CNY Marathon was another constant event that LEO Club will organise annually, during Chinese New Year. It is basically an event which going to visit old folks' homes and orphanages during CNY, to spread some love around for the old folks and kids. It was hold on 26th January 2010, which was a Friday. Previous time, we actually only used a bus and visit to only one particular area's homes. But this time, we used two buses and heading to 2 different area which were KL and Klang area at the same time. About 60 members and committees joined the event. It was a successful one because the members who joined did learnt and feel something different after the visitation. They learnt how to appreciate and cherish what they have now, especially the lovely family they are owning now. We depart from INTI UC at 6.30am, and each bus went to four homes each around KL and Klang area, and reached INTI UC at about 7pm.

= Cherish, Appreciate =

The Valentine's Sale :)

The Valentine's Sale, was a fund-raising event. It hold from 8th January 2010 to 12th January 2010. During the sale, we sold key chains, teddy bears, roses, some cosmetics and offered couple photographic section. It was opened to couples as well as friends. The photo taken will be given a copy to the participants and at the same time, we put another copy on the board for voting section. The top three photos which got the most votes won a prize which cost about RM100. In this event, a lot of new faces turned up and help out at the booth. This actually a platform for members to learn about how to approach people to promote their things and some marketing skills. And the boards that done by publicity department were awesome. All the boards were so nice. Good Job to Publicities! Good job to Everyone! :)

LEO Trip to Malacca

This was an event which LEO Club INTI UC will organise constantly and this time, we went to Melacca. About 30 members and committees joined this trip and we did have alot of fun during the trip. It aimed to foster up the relationships between members and committees. During the trip, we went to A Famosa Water World and that's where most of us got sunburnt. Anyway, it was still interesting! So, during the trip, we tried out the most famous food, 'Satay Celup' and 'li li chicken rice' in Melacca and then at night, we went to jonker walk together. It was a really nice trip which we really did enjoy it together and stay away from all the study stress, well, temporrorily :)

LEO & Adventure's G Night

It was actually a meaningful night for LEO Club INTI UC and Adventure Club INTI UC. We always maintain a good relationships between two clubs, and this time, we organised a combined gathering night for both club's members. The objectives for the night were to foster up the relationships between LEO Club and Adventure Club members, and at the same time support Greening campaign. We requested all both clubs' members to bring their own utensils for dinner to the night. It was a successful one, about 260 members attended the night and most of them brought along their own utensils for dinner. During the night, games and performances were carried out and all the members enjoyed it much. This was the first step we take, to support green in our events and we will carry on taking the second, third, forth steps..
